Burning House Books kick-started in early 2016 with the deep-hearted kindness and generosity of strangers, family and friends. Initially intended as a real life shelves and countertop shop in Cornwall, the space flooded just a week before opening and so Burning House Books has since operated as a pop-up. As Burning House Books I have taken part in some truly great events, including a residency at Howl Space in Cornwall, and Papier Carbone, a festival of independent print and publishing in Belgium. This has given me the opportunity to collaborate with many inspiring, hardworking sellers, artists and writers.
The 'burning house' of the name is taken from a painting by queer mixed-media artist and writer David Wojnarowicz, whose seminal book Close to the Knives: A Memoir of Disintegration (first published in 1991 and recently brought back into print by Canongate) I forcibly press into the hands of every new person I meet. The fire behind Burning House Books was always to promote works that give voice to the marginalised, the soft underbellies and perverts, tough talkers and unapologetic outsiders.
The Burning House Books website is not just an online shop but a space for reviews, interviews and information for upcoming events. I hope to give a platform to voices that have grabbed my attention with their honesty, rawness and tenacity, and whose work I feel it is vital to share.
